A human, a demon, and a witch walk into a bar. Wait, no. Wrong story.
This is the one about the private detective finding a necklace and in the process of finding it’s owner, discovers that his entire life has been a lie. A voice in his head is actually a demon, accidentally put there by a witch determined to imprison him in the necklace and hang it in her gallery of obscure things for eternity. And Albert has always thought he was just a little crazy.
None of that matters now. The three of them have to work together to save the world.
An excerpt…
Jax mumbled, cursed and agonized over his missing memories until the sun came up.
<AHHHHHEEEEEEEE!!!>
The sound of Jax’s screech echoed through Albert’s head and he sat upright, grabbing the arms of the chair to steady himself. He patted himself down to find the necklace and get it off his skin.
It was still lying on the table next to his chair.
“What the fuck Jax!!! You could have given me a heart attack. What’s wrong!!!”
Wails and cries poured through Albert’s skull but Jax didn’t respond. Albert huffed and yelled again.
“Jax, what is wrong with you?” The anger in his voice was overwhelming and the cries dissolved into whispers.
When Jax still didn’t respond, Albert sucked in a long breath and held it while he counted to ten.
“Jax, answer me or I will pick up that damn necklace again!” The words barely made it out of his mouth when Jax yowled
<NO! PLEASE DON’T. THE MEMORIES. THE MEMORIES, THEY’RE GONE!>
Surprised it had worked, Albert sat back, a little relieved. He exhaled slowly and calmed himself before speaking again.
“Ok, hold on. What memories and what do you mean gone?”
Whining, Jax answered, <Of the necklace. I should know. I should see, but they are gone!> Another yowl was followed by sobs.
Albert had never heard anything so sorrowful and broken. He had no idea what to do. He sat back in his chair and ran his hand through his hair. He blew out hard and spoke again.
“Ok, Jax. Let’s take it a step at a time. If they are gone, how do you know they were there?”
Jax settled and tried to calm himself. He had never been so emotional and at a loss. He was terrified. He didn’t know how to survive without his memories. <The pain. I know it. I recognize it, but I can’t find where I know it from. The memories, the movies that would tell me, are blank. They just say She.>
“Ok, so we figure it out. We are detectives of a sort. This is what we do. We will figure this out. Relax.”
<Relax. RELAX!!! MY MEMORIES ARE MISSING AND YOU WANT ME TO RELAX! I CAN’T RELAX, I HAVE TO FIND THEM. I HAVE TO REMEMBER THEM!>
“And you will. We will get this sorted. What do you remember?”
<I remember Rose. My dear sweet Rose. I remember running, and I remember you. WHY CAN’T I REMEMBER THE REST?>
“I don’t know why. Maybe if we find this, She, we will get answers. Let me think a minute.” Albert put his head in his hands and started piecing what he knew together.
